Hi there!
If you got here, I want you to know what you’re in for: behind the scenes of my art making, print making and all around drawing; illustration and art commentary, and views and musings on media. I don’t have a particular plan thought out for this newsletter, other than ‘let’s connect over interesting arts, and let’s have a little fun (or at least feel something)’.
A comic for you to read
Last year, I sent in a submission for the Brasov Festival of Historic Comics. Finishing it and getting it exhibited was a big personal win for me, in this ‘I’ve still got it’ kind of way.
My biggest takeaway as an artist that also wants to tell stories was this: you don’t need to do the best work technically, you just need to make sure your drawings don’t hit the eyes wrong. The story, the pacing, the emotional beats will do the rest of the job to give your reader a good experience.
It took a lot of pressure off, when I realized a reader spends only a couple of seconds on a panel. That meant I only needed to focus on what I wanted to point the reader’s eyes on. As long as that particular object/body part was good enough, I could move on and focus on the next panel and the next page.
You can read the full comic that was exhibited here. The story is a re-interpretation of the legend around the daffodil field near Negrileasa, Alba. There’s a magical bird, greed, and a change of heart at the end - all the right elements to make a good story.
